Farewell to Game Informer: A Sad Farewell After 33 Glorious Years

Today, I bring some somber news from the gaming world that has left many of us in shock. Game Informer, a cherished source of gaming news and reviews, is closing its doors after an incredible 33-year journey. This decision comes following a sudden announcement from GameStop, which stated that the publication would cease operations immediately, with the staff being laid off and severance terms to follow.

Game Informer took to X/Twitter to share this heart-wrenching news, writing:

“After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer.”

“From the early days of pixelated adventures to today’s immersive virtual realms, we’ve been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers. While our presses may stop, the passion we have for gaming that we’ve cultivated together will continue to live on. Thank you for being part of our epic quest, and may your own gaming adventures never end.”

This sudden closure has left many in the gaming community and the Game Informer staff in disbelief. Kotaku reported that the staff was informed during a meeting on Friday, August 2, by GameStop’s VP of HR, that the publication was closing immediately. This abrupt end means the staff were 70% done with the next issue, which reportedly had a fantastic cover story.

Kyle Hilliard, Game Informer’s content director, expressed the team’s shock and disappointment on X/Twitter, revealing the next issue was almost complete. Alex Van Aken, Game Informer’s video lead, also shared the confusion among the staff, with many not knowing what was happening.

Game Informer has a rich history, starting in August 1991 when FuncoLand published an in-house newsletter. GameStop acquired Game Informer in 2000 and turned it into the longest-running video game magazine globally. At its peak in 2011, Game Informer was the third-largest magazine in the U.S., with over 8 million copies distributed.

The magazine’s website, launched in 1996, has been a go-to source for gamers worldwide. The last issue, #367, featured Dragon Age: The Veilguard as the cover story, but sadly, we will never see what issue #368 would have brought us.

As we bid farewell to Game Informer, I reflect on the countless hours I spent poring over their reviews, previews, and features. Game Informer has been more than just a magazine; it has been a pillar of the gaming community, shaping our experiences and connecting us with the ever-evolving world of video games.

Here’s to the memories, the adventures, and the countless hours spent with Game Informer.

May your own gaming adventures never end.
